Why you askin’? Campaign

Because we want disabled employees to succeed.

Talking about your unique needs helps to create a workplace that works for everyone.

We work with employers across Scotland, supporting them to become more disability inclusive workplaces, where both employer and employee are set up to succeed.

Part of this work involves supporting employers to gather disability data and encouraging employees to confidently disclose and discuss their disabilities.

Employers are learning more about disability but often don’t have the information to fully understand their employees’ individual requirements.

The more meaningful information employers have, the better placed they are to support their employees and ensure their recruitment process is working to improve diversity and inclusion.

This is why the Why you askin’? Campaign was launched.

Why do employers need to ask for information about disability?

* So disabled employees feel valued, respected and understood.
* To better understand their workforce and therefore better support them.
* To improve engagement and retention levels.
* To pinpoint barriers in the recruitment process that could be working against their disability inclusion efforts.
* To improve the diversity of their workplace.
* To be better able to measure impact and successes.

Campaign Aim

We are supporting employers to gather disability data by encouraging employees to disclose their disabilities and discuss what reasonable adjustments will make it easier for them to reach their potential, by creating an open dialogue and trust culture in organisations.

An important part of this is for employees to understand why the employer is asking for this information and feel confident that it is being used for a positive reason.

Talking about disability helps to create a workplace that works for everyone.

The campaign has been launched to support the employers who are working with our Apt project and have demonstrated their commitment to training, learning and improving their processes to become more inclusive employers.

We have developed a range of materials, including posters, leaflets, social media graphics and PDFs to support employers to encourage open communication in the workplace.
